About us

Cornilo Riding is a riding school with a long tradition. For us, it's not all about winning competitions: we love it when our riders achieve, just as much as getting that shoulder-in in canter as rising to the trot for the first time. We specialise in teaching thorough basic equitation skills, providing you with an excellent foundation on which to progress - wherever that may be; we aim to adapt the 'curriculum' to suit you.

All our staff work as a team and will be happy to tell you more about the riding activities we offer and help you find the horse or pony that's right for you.

We're always happy to welcome new customers who are interested in learning to ride, or to return to riding after time out of the saddle. We can coach you up to BHSAI plus all Pony Club exams, and we are also authorised to examine on-site for all the BHS Progressive Riding Tests.

Marina Aunger has spent all her life with horses. She grew up at The Black Pig in Staple, attending the West Street South Pony Club and gaining her 'A' test. She evented her horses and is qualified to BHS Intermediate Instructor level. Marina was manager of Cornilo Riding for more than 25 years before she became its owner in 2015.

Our polo festival introduced polo to a few new people. Great fun was had by all, and an exciting end of festival tournament saw a 1-0 victory to the 'Bouyant Blues'.

Well done to Courtney Aunger and Burt on completing their first ever 'Eventer's Challenge' 60-70cm class. We are especially delighted because they went and won it! Congratulations to a promising team.

Here are some of our first time competitors at the Walmer Show  with their rosettes. Well done to Sophie, Glenn, Yasmin and Millie. Overall Cornilo Riding came home with more than 20 rosettes!

Thank you to Lisa Morley for donating 6 super show jackets to Cornilo Riding. We are planning to keep them here to lend to our younger riders who wish to go to their first show and cannot invest in expensive kit. If anyone else has any riding wear they no longer need we would be more than happy to add them to our 'show wardrobe'.

Big congratulations to Sharon Kelsall and Harley for qualifying at their first dressage competition....and now it is onto the next level representing Cornilo RDA at Hickstead!

We really need some more rain - just look at the pond - an all-time record since it was dredged 18months ago.

Our Pony Club members all learned about clipping and trimming this holiday, so all the ponies look very smart and are ready for the warm weather.

Well done to Georgia Finnis for being awarded the 'Stella Preston' Memorial Trophy, for being nominated as the kindest and most thoughtful person towards animals and people. The next nomination will be during our anniversary week in June.

Teams of three set off on our first ever Treasure Hunt. Riding off-premises to solve and collect clues. Well done to 'Team Bomber' for winning (and not getting lost!).

Riders returning home for Christmas joined us for an Alumni Hack in glorious winter sunshine.

Customers, staff and RDA volunteers all gathered together for food, drink and conversation hosted at Sutton Vale. Prizes were arwarded to many, including the Highest Goal Scorer Award to polo player Jenny Jenner.

Cornilo Riding had a hugely sucessful day as part of the "National Give Horses A Go" initiative. We would like to thank everyone who came along to see us and the many activities we have on offer.

Marina and Robert would like to thank all the helpers who ensured the day ran smoothly and showed how much fun riding is.

As part of our premises maintenance programme the sand school has had the drainage enhanced. Work was carried out between weekends to avoid disruption over our busiest times. Now we are waiting for rain so we can appreciate how well the new drains work!

Now that spring has arrived we are planning to take regular hacks out over the nearby farmland and bridleways. Riders will be asked to fill in an identity tag for their hatband when out hacking, just in case of emergencies. These will be provided free of charge for you to fill in your details before you hack out.

This autumn we applied for official British Horse Society Training Centre Status, and in November we had our specific training inspection to assess if our training was at the standard required for what we promise to deliver, and that the horses and facilities were suitable. It was great to find out in December that we have been awarded Training Centre Status, and that we have been recognised for the training we provide.

Our application for accreddiation as a British Horse Society Training Centre is underway. We are planning to hold short residential courses, using our good neighbours Sutton Vale Country Club to help us provide accommodation within walking distance of Cornilo Riding.

The local Council decided that our pond was no longer helping the rainwater drain from the road. In a matter of days it has been dredged, the 'island' removed and a 'slipway' provided! We will still be able to paddle on the edge, but it will probably be too deep to ride across.
